The Church Management Roundup is a column where I post the latest and greatest news, resources, and/or tips that have crossed my path in helping run the ‘business’ of church.
Ministry Tech Magazine – Free and Worth Its Weight in Gold
If you haven’t subscribed to Ministry Tech Magazine, jump on their website, subscriptions are free and awesome.
I can’t tell you how much I look forward to this monthly e-magazine. It provides great resources for all-things church and technology. One other thing I love about the magazine is that they are always clear on who sponsors their ads, no gimmicks. Click here to Subscribe Free.
As a side note, years ago, I went to a conference at Villanova University where the editor of Ministry Tech, Steve Hewitt, gave a talk on the future of technology. I’ll never forget it, he talked about this thing called “the cloud.” I thought he was nuts and remember thinking, Why would anyone want to store information on a cloud and not on their laptop/desktop? Well, I was wrong…to say the least.
Podcasts For Busy Church Managers
I have been listening to some great podcasts lately. To be honest, I always thought I had to pay for podcasts (like audio books) but I was completely wrong.
Once I discovered that I could listen to any podcast for free on every topic under the sun, I was exhilarated. Long car ride? Commute? Jog? Podcast listening has you covered. Here are some my favorites this week:
- Pro Church Podcast by Brady Shearer. This past week, Brady discusses Using Metrics To Make Better Church Website Decision. These podcasts are great – informative, insightful, and practical!
- This Your Life by Michael Hyatt. I have been a fan of Michael’s podcasts for a long time. Although the topic of church management is not the theme, Michael provides a wide range of personal development tips, tricks and resources. He is motivational and what I find most appealing is his authenticity. This past week the topic was How to Lead Your Leader.
Apps That I Can’t Live Without
I could go on and on about apps that I love but I’ll just start with two of my favorites.
- Scrivener by Literature and Latte – If you’re a writer, this app is for you. Whether you’re writing homilies, articles, blog posts or books, this is a great app. The features and functions are endless, however, I love to use it for content collection.
- For example, I keep all my website and article writing in one place. Instead of trying to locate the information in a series of folders, all content is stored in one place where I can draft, revise, search and tag.
- Hemingway Editor – This app allows you to put your words to the reader test. After entering your text, the app highlights wordy sentences in yellow and more egregious ones in red. It also shows you places to tighten up your writing including adverbs, passive voice, and dull, complicated words.
- One of my favorite features is that it provides the Grade level of your writing and how long it will take for your words to be read. The app told me it will take you 1 minute and 52 seconds to read this blog post..is that accurate?
